Overview
Many Micro Finance Institutions have significant amounts of Assets on their
Balance sheets invested within their Lending Portfolio. Prudent Management of
this portfolio is therefore a key aspect. The prime objective of the workshop is
to improve credit portfolio management and profitability by further developing
the lending skills of employees at different levels within Micro Finance
Institutions.
This workshop addresses the urgent training demands of the micro finance
services sector to keep current with the global financial trends.

WORKSHOP 1: (2 half days)
Credit Analysis Techniques for Microlending Institutions
Objectives
This intensive 2 half-day workshop will provide participants with a
comprehensive overview of the issues and challenges that face micro finance
institutions, when they engage with the economically and socially important
industry sectors made up of personal lending and the financing of small and
medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to provide start-up and development finance.
This will be established from the economic, political and social setting of SME’s,
through their financing needs and how they arise to how banks structure and
price deals.
At the end of the workshop delegates will have availed themselves of the
opportunity to gain understanding and to practice skills associated with:
• Tools and techniques for the analysis/monitoring and control of personal lending
• Personal financial situation analysis and budgeting for the client
• The economic setting and importance of the SME sector
• Forming a holistic view of a business, its setting, its prospects, its strengths and weaknesses and the opportunities available to a financier
to assist in a mutually beneficial and profitable manner
• Appreciation of the correlation between the risks associated with a
lending proposal and a fair level of compensation by way of margin and
fees
• Understanding of and proficiency in use of the latest tools and
techniques available to Lenders conducting analysis and due diligence
• Reviewing and analyzing financial statements and differing cash flow
profiles
• Awareness and understanding of instruments and products available to
both lenders and borrowers to reduce or relocate credit risk
• Identifying and managing bad and doubtful debts (NPLs)
Approach & Methodology
The workshop will be highly participative, using various kinds of involvement.
The methodology will combine tutorials with case studies and business
scenarios, including pre and post course readings. Practical exercises will be
conducted to manage credit risks under competitive and realistic conditions.
Each workshop component will be welded together in practical experiences on
group case study projects.
